Formed in March 1968 Deep Purple's first gig was in Denmark on the 20th April, they recorded their first album in May and started a short UK tour soon after, appearing at Sunbury. Opening on the Main Stage at 7pm on Saturday evening they also played the Marquee at 9pm, one of only three bands to play two slots, the others being Tramline - featuring a young Mickey Moody and Joe Cocker - a year before his career defining performance at Woodstock. 8th National Jazz and Blues Festival programme held at Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury on 9th -11th August 1968 featuring among others Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Deep Purple, Traffic, Jethro Tull, The Taste, Ten Years After, Arthur Brown, Incredible String Band, Chicken Shack, Fairport Convention, Joe Cocker, Jerry Lee Lewis.
